Elections negative on trade

bob-dinneenThe Renewable Fuels Association says trade discussions in the Presidential election have been negative.

“Secretary Clinton has been in favor of trade liberalization throughout her career.  She has opposed some trade packs if she has felt that there weren’t enough protections for American workers.  Donald Trump on the other hand has never met a track pack that he likes.”

Renewable Fuels Association President Bob Dinneen tells Brownfield while both Clinton and Trump are not in favor of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement, they are generally supportive of agriculture.  “Agriculture today has a $40 billion surplus, more exports than imports.  That contrasts of course to a $500 billion trade deficit, but for agriculture, trade is critical.”

Dinneen says with more distillers grains produced than ever before and low corn prices, the ag industry needs to build export markets and new markets.  “I happen to believe no matter who wins in November, trade policy is going to continue.  We’re not going to walk away from the world economy.”

He says if the Senate flips parties after the election, the lame duck session could be nonexistent leaving little hope for passage of TPP.
