Dry weather stressing Michigan crops but moves fruit harvest along

A stretch of dry weather in Michigan has kept irrigation systems going.

In its latest crop progress report, the USDA says a lack of moisture and above-normal temperatures have begun stressing crops.

Recent conditions have allowed the harvest of summer fruits to move further ahead of average.

Mid-season peach varieties are being harvested at a rapid pace with reports of good to excellent quality.

Tart cherry harvest is nearly complete in the Northwest, where timely rains and warm temps softened later harvested fruit.

Grape clusters continue to fill out as growers monitor vineyards for pests and disease.

And the harvest of vegetables like pickles, squash, sweet corn, broccoli and cauliflower is ongoing.
