Dry conditions to finish out harvest

An ag meteorologist says farmers in the Corn Belt should have mostly dryer than normal conditions for the rest of harvest.

Kyle Tapley with Washington, DC based MDA Weather Services tells Brownfield while rain is moving through most of the Midwest this week, things are expected to clear up.  “Even into November we’re looking at below normal rainfall it looks like across most of the Corn Belt, so I think we’ll see an improving theme for the harvest for corn and soybeans in the U.S. at least.”

He says this year’s transition to La Niña happened a bit later than expected and didn’t really impact the growing season.  “As we move into the winter months, we typically see with a La Niña some drier conditions across the southern tier of the U.S.  The southern plains’ hard red wheat areas could be seeing some dryness this winter heading into spring next year.”

Tapley, speaking with Brownfield during the Export Exchange, says if La Niña continues into next summer the Midwest could potentially see hotter and drier weather swings.
