Dow second quarter earnings up, sales down

Dow Chemical had weaker sales in the second quarter, but overall steady earnings.  Their second quarter report was released today, saying stockholders earned $2.61 a share.

Dow says low crop commodity prices are affecting sales, and they still have a lot of inventory on the shelf.  Their seed sales had double-digit growth for corn, but that was offset by low soybean and sunflower demand.  The company also had less demand for herbicides.

Dow’s CEO says the company has now had 15 straight quarters with earnings growth and margin expansion, and he’s excited about the recent vote to merge with DuPont and then separate the new company into three independent science-based companies.

DuPont also reported higher second quarter earnings this week.
