Disney records show $177 million settlement to BPI

The notation of a $177 million expenditure in Walt Disney’s quarterly financial statement is reportedly the cash settlement in the Beef Products Incorporated defamation case against ABC.  BPI sued ABC for $5.7 billion, saying it and reporter Jim Avila defamed BPI by using the term “pink slime” in reference to lean finely textured beef.  Disney, which owns ABC, and BPI came to an undisclosed settlement in June, more than three weeks into the trial.  A Fox Business story says Disney’s financial report shows a charge of $177 million described as being “in connection with settlement of litigation.” The figure is not directly linked to the defamation case, but the BPI litigation is the only one Disney specifies in its report.
