Disaster program is available to producers impacted by wildfires

A livestock economist says livestock producers impacted by the wildfires in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and Colorado need to keep detailed records of their losses.

Scott Brown is with the University of Missouri.  “I know we’ll have the Livestock Indemnity Program, or LIP available to help make payments for producers that have been affected by the wildfires,” he says.

He tells Brownfield while producers are concerned with the well-being of their livestock first, they also need to keep in mind the business of their operation and make sure they have the adequate documentation that is needed.  “The last thing I want is for folks to not be able to take advantage of programs that are available in cases like this,” he says.  “And if you think of the scope of what producers are having to deal with right now – many acres where producers will have to go around and find animals that have perished as a result of the fire.”

Several relief efforts are underway to help the farmers and ranchers impacted by the wildfires.
