Deluge interrupts Illinois State Fair

The Illinois State Fair reopened Saturday after a more than 5-inch torrent of rain fell in two hours closing the fair Friday night and causing Friday evening events to be canceled or postponed.  The resulting flood affected much of the State Fairgrounds, including the Happy Hollow camping area.  Most of the campers parked there were left uninhabitable.  Displaced campers were accommodated by other exhibitor families and by the Red Cross.  State Fair officials restricted access to the Happy Hollow area for safety reasons following the deluge.

The National Weather Service gave advance warning of the storm and State Fair officials reported no injuries or loss of life to either people or animals.

Friday’s storm did not stop the naming of State Fair Grand Champions on Saturday in preparation for Tuesday’s Sale of Champions.  A list of the honors is at Brownfield Ag News, dot com.
