Dairy needs money infusion in next Farm Bill

NFU President Roger Johnson

The president of the National Farmers Union says the dairy safety net in the next Farm Bill needs a significant infusion of money.

Roger Johnson says the current Dairy Margin Protection Program (MPP) baseline is severely lacking.

“It’s a big industry in terms of the footprint it has in overall agriculture, and it’s going to clearly take a billion dollars or more to stand up some sort of a fix for the dairy program.”

He suggests MPP could look similar to what was originally proposed in the last Farm Bill.

“But was cut radically back by Congress in an effort to save money, and they did!  They saved a lot of money; they didn’t spend any money for dairy, at a time when you’ve got a lot of strain out there in that industry.”

Johnson says one of the biggest challenges for agriculture will be convincing Congress to increase spending on dairy, cotton, and other commodities in the new Farm Bill.
