Cuban delegation visits with U.S. grains industry

Kurt Shultz

The U.S. Grains Council (USGC) has welcomed their first Cuban delegation to the U.S. after almost 20 years of working with the country’s grain exports.

Kurt Shultz with USGC tells Brownfield there is interest from both the U.S. and Cuba to build stronger relationships.  “The Cubans recognize that they don’t have the ability to feed an influx of tourists that they anticipate and so they’re projecting at 30 to 40 percent growth rate just in corn imports which also implies soybean imports.”

He says if Cuba purchased all of its corn from the U.S., it would be the 10th largest export market for the U.S.  “This is an opportunity for the Cubans to see and have a better understanding of what we can do to help them as they look to expand their industries.”

Shultz says the recent visit is just the beginning as the partnership between the two countries will continue to grow with easing trade regulations.
