Corn growers want options in next farm bill

Wis Corn Growers Assn President Casey Kelleher

Wisconsin commodity group leaders say the next farm bill will need to have more safety net options.

Casey Kelleher is the President of the Wisconsin Corn Growers Association.  He tells Brownfield the farm bill will need to meet the needs of producers in different parts of the country, so having more than one choice is good.  “It’s such a big country and different lays of the land that they need to be tweaked because where ARC works in one place, PLC works in a different place.  There’s got to be different options because one program is not going to work for everybody.”

Kelleher says some commodity producers didn’t get a good farm bill last time. “Dairy and cotton and those are two big commodities in the country.  Soybean and corn are fortunate that for the most part they got treated alright, but everybody needs that fair game or otherwise we’re not going to have them.”

The Wisconsin Corn Growers Association is conducting a survey of members during this week’s convention to find out what they want in the next farm bill.
