Continued crop insurance critical for Ohio farmers

Franklin County Farm Bureau President Jeff Schilling

An Ohio farmer says he doesn’t want any more cuts to crop insurance in the next Farm Bill. Franklin County Farmer Jeff Schilling says crop insurance provides the best safety net for farmers.

“If we ever would have a catastrophe where we would loose 80 percent of our crop, that small government payment isn’t going to make up that difference, where crop insurance is going to help bring you back to a level where you can survive that bad year,” says Schilling.

He says that’s what he’ll share with Ohio lawmakers when he visits with them in Washington DC this week.

“I feel crop insurance is very valuable and I think that subsidy should be continued. If there’s going to be programs cut somewhere they should look into other places before they start cutting from from the 20 percent that actually goes to help the farmers,” says Schilling.

Schilling is President of the Franklin County Farm Bureau. He’ll be meeting with lawmakers as a part of the 71st Annual Ohio President’s Trip.
