Conaway: elimination of estate tax is good for ag

The Chairman of the House Ag Committee says tax reform was a big topic during the sixth and final House Ag Committee farm bill listening session.

Congressman Michael Conaway says tax reform must be done.

“The current code is a burden on our economy and it’s a drain on growing the economy,” he says. “With it and the overreaching regulatory scheme of the last eight years it’s a miracle the American economy can continue to grow in the face of that,” he says.

He says farmer and ranchers are still concerned about the estate tax and eliminating it is the right thing to do.

“Death should not be a taxable event,” he says. “So I’m hopeful we can get that wrong-headed concept out of our tax code.”

The dairy program, crop insurance, and rural development were also discussed during Monday’s listening session.
