Conaway discusses farm bill timetable

The chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, Mike Conaway, says his original goal of finishing the 2018 farm bill by the end of this year is still a possibility.

“We’re putting pencil to paper now on re-drafting the new farm bill, including the nutrition title. We’ll have that done, we think, over the next several weeks,” Conaway says. “As soon as we can show where we’ve got the votes, I think the leader will put us on the floor—we’ll back up from that by several days to run it through committee and move forward. But hopefully by the end of this fourth quarter or early the first quarter of next year.”

Conaway says Senate Ag Committee chair Pat Roberts is talking about a similar timeframe. But Conaway thinks the House Ag Committee is a little further along in the process.
