CHS promotes from within, names Debertin CEO

CHS, the nation’s largest farmer-owned cooperative, has promoted from within to replace CEO Carl Casale.

Executive vice president and COO of energy and food processing Jay Debertin, who joined the co-op in 1984, was chosen by the CHS board of directors.

Board chairman Dan Schurr says Debertin’s experience in achieving operational excellence and driving results fits squarely with their goal to deliver returns to CHS member-owners now and for the long-term.

A CHS press release says Casale led the cooperative to record performance levels and expansion in his seven years as CEO by focusing on prudent fiscal management and enhancing management systems at the company.

Responding to a question about Casale’s departure, CHS vice president of communications Beth LaBreche tells Brownfield both the board and Carl recognized the period of growth and building infrastructure to support growth has evolved.

Entering into a new period of leveraging that infrastructure for operational excellence and financial return, she says Debertin is the right leader to meet the challenge.
