Chronic Wasting reported in Michigan
The first case of Chronic Wasting Disease in a free-ranging deer was confirmed in Mid-Michigan. The last case reported in the state was at a privately owned cervid facility in 2008. Steve Schmitt, veterinarian-in-charge at the Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Disease Lab says strong public awareness and cooperation are critical for a rapid response to evaluate any deer suspected. Signs include deer that are unusually thin or exhibiting unusual behavior like tameness. Chronic wasting disease is a fatal neurological disease that affects white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk and moose.
