China presents big opportunities for US beef producers

A livestock market specialist says China presents both short and long term opportunities for US beef producers.

University of Missouri’s Scott Brown says once regulatory hurdles have been cleared, there should be opportunity to import lower-end products right away.  “When you look at the kinds of products that the Chinese have imported from a beef standpoint, it tends to be some of the lower valued products that maybe we don’t value as much or don’t consume so much here in the United States,” he says.

But, he tells Brownfield – the US is positioned well to capitalize on some long-term benefits in that market.  “I continue to look at some of the upper class in China who have growing incomes who are looking for more of a Western diet,” he says.  “I think that fits very well with some of the higher quality beef that we produce in the United States here today.”

Technical hurdles still need to be cleared before the US can begin exporting beef to China, however the USDA has indicated talks are moving fast and the final details should be in place sometime in June.
