China and US ink large soybean deal

China and the US have signed 15 soybean purchase agreements whose total value reached $4.3 billion U.S. dollars. Mark Jackson, the president-elect of the Iowa Soybean Association, says it shows that the “seeds that were planted” during Vice President Xi Jinping’s first visit to Iowa nearly 30 years ago are starting to bear fruit, “It’s just an outstanding opportunity for us,” says Jackson.

Xi, the man who is expected to become China’s next president, predicts expansion of Chinese trade with Iowa – and the entire U.S. – in the years ahead. He spoke through an interpreter last night as he addressed an invited crowd gathered inside the Iowa State Capitol.

“I want to engage with a broad cross-section of American society to help deepen the friendship between Chinese and American people,” says Xi.

The first ever U.S/Chinese Ag Symposium got underway in Des Moines this morning – with U.S. Ag Secretary Vilsack, China’s Vice President Xi and others.
