Brocksmith named National Farm Mom of the Year

An Indiana farmer has received the ultimate Mother’s Day recognition.

Third generation farmer Susan Brocksmith of Vincennes, Ind. has been named Monsanto’s America’s Farmers National Farm Mom of the Year.

She says women play in integral role in today’s agriculture industry.  “Some women are in the front and are the farmers,” she says.  “And other women are out there supporting their husbands in the field, too.  We as women have taken on a lot of the different roles over the years to make sure agriculture is where it’s at today.”

She tells Brownfield the recognition gives her the platform to connect with other moms who have questions about modern agriculture and food production.  “We are as concerned about our environment as any other person,” she says.  “We want to make our soil, our food safer and better than when we started.”

In addition to farming, Brocksmith is also a professor of Agribusiness at Vincennes University.  “I really have been blessed that I not only live it at home, but I also live it at work,” she says.  “That I get to work with these young people so they understand the important role that they play.”

And, she says, she wants her students to have a hands-on understanding of important role farming plays around the world.
