Avian influenza found in Alabama

The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries is investigating three possible cases of high-path avian influenza on three separate premises in northern Alabama.

The virus was discovered on a commercial breeding operation and in a backyard flock. An investigation into a possible case is underway at a flea market.

According to the department, no significant mortality was reported in the commercial operation and samples from all three locations are being sent to the USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories in Ames, Iowa.

Alabama’s State Department of Agriculture issued an order Tuesday stopping movement of certain types of poultry and said the suspected cases do not pose a risk to the food supply or food chain.

The Alabama locations are close to the recent A-I discoveries in Tennessee. Alabama’s ag director says they are working closely with the Tennessee ag department.
