Avian flu in Asia could have positive impact on U.S. egg demand

The president of the USA Poultry and Egg Export Council says as the avian influenza outbreak worsens across Asia, demand for American eggs will likely grow.

Jim Sumner tells Brownfield U.S. and South Korean trade officials are actively negotiating terms beneficial to both countries.

“We are flush with eggs right now in the United States (and) our market prices are pretty low compared to average.  So it provides a good opportunity for our industry and also provides a good opportunity for the Koreans.”

South Korea has culled nearly 26 million birds in an effort to control the outbreak, and most have been egg-laying hens.

Sumner says a trade agreement could happen soon.

“Our governments are working as we speak trying to figure this out, and I suspect in the very near future we’ll be shipping all types of egg products there.”

The U.S. has been exporting mostly dry egg products to South Korea, but Sumner anticipates an unprecedented need for liquid and frozen eggs as a result of the avian flu outbreak in Asia.
