ASA leaders take environmental regulation concerns to D.C.

American Soybean Association (ASA) leaders will be addressing environmental regulations with lawmakers in Washington, D.C. this week.

ASA director Lawrence Sukalski of Minnesota says the controversial Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS) rule remains a concern, even though President Trump issued an executive order to repeal it.

“WOTUS is not completely off the table.  I think the President is looking into it and having people check it out and explain it.  So hopefully it will get off the table.”

New EPA director Scott Pruitt said Trump’s reversal of WOTUS preserves a federal role in protecting water, but also restores the states’ important role in the regulation of water.

Sukalski tells Brownfield soybean growers plan on discussing federal efforts to protect pollinators as well.

“Sometimes people want to get rid of some of our crop protection products like neonics.  So they’re all things we have to worry about so we can keep a healthy agriculture and raise a good crop of corn and soybeans.”

He says policy briefings will also include exports, renewable fuels, and the next Farm Bill.

Sukalski is also a Minnesota Soybean Grower director for Martin County.
