Article portrays all CAFO proposals as controversial

The executive director of the Minnesota Pork Producers Association says the tone and content of a recent newspaper article about a pending court case involving a feedlot in southeastern Minnesota gives the impression that all proposed Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO’s) are controversial.

David Preisler tells Brownfield the Minneapolis Star Tribune story, which details a three year battle over environmental concerns with a CAFO in Dodge County, inaccurately portrays an attitude of resistance by local communities.

“As we look at the vast majority of new feedlot applications, or for expansions of farms, the vast majority of them are not controversial.  I think that’s just one of the things that’s really disappointing as to the way the story was headlined and also covered, is that it gave an inaccurate picture of what’s going on out in the countryside.”

The article was headlined “Appeals Court to decide Dodge County Hog Farm Lawsuit Pitting Pollution vs. Water.”

He says for producers, this is a reminder to ensure strong relationships with neighbors and select the best site possible.

“Actually, the site in this case is a very, very good site.  So sometimes that isn’t necessarily a predictor of how things are going to go.  But, good site selection and good neighbor relationships are really going to be the key.”

Preisler says a neighbor sued the hog farm and also Dodge County, which issued the permit in 2014.

The case is now in the hands of the Minnesota Court of Appeals, with a decision expected within 90 days.
