Anticipating above average yields at harvest

An agronomist says he anticipates above average yields for both corn and soybeans despite some weather challenges in southwest Indiana.

Matt Parmer with DeKalb/Asgrow says growers have seen a lot of cloudy, wet weather this summer.  “It’s brought in not only more disease like Grey Leaf Spot,” he says.  “But, we’re not getting the full photosynthetic capability to really finish off some of these kernels like we may have wanted.”

He tells Brownfield the crop hasn’t seen a lot of relief.  “We’ve had a lot of really warm nights as well,” he says.  “I think we’re going on our 14th night above 70 degrees and we’re seeing a little bit of tip back.”

Parmer says he’s optimistic the soybeans will finish strong.  “I’ve seen a little bit of phytopthora from all the wet weather,” he says.  “But I’m pretty hopeful that we get some good sunny weather and maybe take some of this humidity out and some cooler temperatures come in.  Maybe in August we can finish out some of these beans as well.”
