Ag land sales jump 40 percent

One of the nation’s largest sellers of farm real estate reports a nearly 40 percent jump in ag land sales.

Farmers National senior vice president Randy Dickhut says the company is encouraged by the increasing volume of transactions, up 38 percent on the year.

“In light of the slower land market.  In a lot of areas there’s not much land on the market for sale.  People are kind of watching this gradual slide in land values and the farm economy and seeing where it heads.  But we’re real pleased with it.”

Acres sold by the company in its 28-state service area have climbed almost 30 percent in the last two years.

Dickhut tells Brownfield farmers continue buying most of the available land.

“In the land market, there’s only about one percent, if that, of the land that openly trades hands in any given year.  So it’s very important to know the land market, know who the buyers and sellers are, and I think that’s what is happening.”

Farmers National also reports strong land auction activity, with a 12 percent increase in the number of auctions sales compared to a year ago.
