Ag groups express support of Perdue

Agriculture groups are expressing support for former Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue, president-elect Trump’s nomination for U.S. Ag Secretary.

The National Chicken Council says Perdue is a “welcomed choice from the Broiler Belt” – citing his veterinary medicine and political background. Georgia is the nation’s top chicken producing state.

The president of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association says they have “no doubt” Perdue will “step in and stand up for rural America” in this time of increasing regulations.

The American Soybean Association says it looks forward to working with Perdue on a “viable risk management framework” to helping expand markets overseas.

American Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall says he has known Perdue for years and Perdue understands the challenges facing rural America including the impacts of immigration reform, trade and governmental regulation.

National Farmers Union president Roger Johnson says he hopes Perdue will continue to maintain policies crucial to farmers in a down farm economy

Trump said in a statement that Perdue “is going to accomplish great things as Secretary of Agriculture” and the former Georgia Governor who grew up on a farm “has spent his whole life understanding and solving the challenges” U.S. farmers face.

If confirmed, Perdue will be the first U.S. Ag Secretary from the south in more than two decades.
