Access to affordable, quality healthcare concern for Rural America

A bipartisan group of Senators wants to make sure Rural Americans have access to affordable, quality healthcare.

Indiana Senator Joe Donnelly, a member of the group, says he has concerns about how the health care plan introduced by Republicans this week, which would repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, would impact Hoosier farmers and those in Rural America.  “The bill before the House of Representatives now – I’m somewhat concerned about the fact that it appears that there will be a lot more Hoosiers that lose coverage because of this bill,” he says.  “For our older Hoosiers 55 to 60 years old – health care is going to be more expensive because they’re changing the calculation on how it’s paid.”

He tells Brownfield he’d like to see improvement in the existing healthcare law rather than replacing it.  “To make it so you can have a little bit more customized health care plans that can cost less, maybe not include some features that you don’t need, and to have Health Savings Accounts – those types of things,” he says.  “But I couldn’t get any cooperation on working together on that to try and fix it.”

Donnelly, along with 40 other Senators sent a letter to Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price last month urging the department to work with Congress to ensure the government does not act as an impediment to providing health care in rural communities.
