Indiana State Poultry Association helps Hoosiers in need

The Indiana State Poultry Association has donated poultry products to Hoosiers in need the week of Thanksgiving for the last 70 years.

This year the association has donated 75 tons, or 150,000 pounds, of poultry products that will be distributed to food banks around the state.

The association’s executive vice president Paul Brennan says the event has evolved over the years, but the poultry producer’s willingness to give to Hoosiers in need has remained the same.

“Our industries are able to do this and are able produce because of the good, healthy environment we have here,” he says. “We have a very positive impact on Indiana and Indiana has a very positive impact on us.”

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb says the annual donation epitomizes the farmer’s willingness to give back to their community and state.

“That’s the strength of Indiana and that’s the definition of what being a Hoosier is about,” he says. “When you have something in abundance you give it back to the community and that’s what today represents and why it has become a tradition.”

John Elliott, Gleaners Food Bank CEO and president, says protein donations help meet the nutrition needs of those who are food insecure, especially around the holidays.

The donation will be delivered to Gleaners Food Bank and then distributed to 21 counties throughout the state.

Indiana is one of the nation’s top poultry producing states. It is ranked first in duck production, second in egg production, and fourth in turkeys raised.
