NCGA says EPA is wrong in atrazine report

Top StoryThe National Corn Growers Association president says the EPA’s draft report that calls for a reduction in the amount of the herbicide atrazine that can be used is a blow to farmers, “As a corn farmer and a farmer in general, I’m really disappointed in the report that has come out today (Thursday) to provide effective, cost-efficient weed control.”

Chip Bowling tells Brownfield Ag News that the lower atrazine levels recommended would be useless to growers, “If we’re going to keep attempting to control weeds that are growing wild out here, and noxious weeds, need atrazine in our toolbox.”

The NCGA says the EPA based its recommendations on studies that its own 2012 Scientific Advisory Panel deemed flawed. Bowling says studies show atrazine is safe. The draft report will be published in the Federal Register and open for public comment.
