National Farmers Union supports mandatory GMO labeling

National Farmers Union Govt. Relations VP Chandler Goule at the NFU Annual Convention, Wichita, Kan., Mar. 16, 2015.

The National Farmers Union supports mandatory GMO labeling.

Vice President Chandler Goule says NFU has a simple policy on the issue.

“We support (mandatory) GMO labeling, but we do not say how it needs to be labeled, where it needs to be labeled or what (needs to be labeled).  It just needs to be information the consumer can readily access.  I do think we’re going to have some debate on that; whether or not it will change we’ll have to wait until the end of the Convention to find out.  But that is our current policy.”

The Senate Agriculture Committee has advanced a voluntary GMO labeling bill and last week alternative mandatory legislation was introduced as well.

Goule tells Brownfield NFU wants to know more before voicing its support.

“I’m guessing there will be a combination of pre-emption with some sort of voluntary/mandatory type of bill that will come out of the Senate, and then we’ll be able to determine our support or not.”

Brownfield spoke to Goule at the National Farmers Union Convention in Minneapolis.
