Poultry producers can meet consumer demand

A poultry industry official says producers can and will adapt to just about any consumer demand.

Paul Brennan with the Indiana State Poultry Association says the consumer reigns supreme and if they want it – and they are willing to pay for it, producers will meet the demand for the product.  He says agriculture is constantly changing – and producers are evolving to meet those changes.  “Production methods, systems, and ways of farming have changed for millennia,” he says.  “The pace may be quicker any more – and that which we are reacting to may come from different sources than it used to, but this is a process that has gone on forever and would continue to – I would guess.”

He tells Brownfield while the industry is already shifting some of its production methods to meet consumer demands, it won’t happen overnight.  “It does take time,” he says.  “Because the facilities in existence from the last wave of what the consumer wanted still exist and still function.  You can’t just build facilities at the drop of a hat – you have to plan tha tout.”

Brennan says he has seen a lot of the changes in his career and some have been science based – but more often than not the changes have been to meet the demand of consumers.
