Michigan dry bean planting right on schedule

Programs ICONThe Executive Director of the Michigan Bean Commission expects about 10 percent of the state’s dry beans to be planted by the week’s end.

Joe Cramer tells Brownfield the first week in June is ideal for dry bean planting.  He says the areas that have been held up with corn and soybean planting are not necessarily big dry bean producing regions.  “I don’t think we’ve seen a lot of switching into beans or away from dry beans.”  He says while dry bean acreage is down, he expects it to be in line with the five year average.

Cramer says growing season challenges in China, Argentina and Brazil, an increase in demand from Mexico and a reduced carryover from last year should provide upside potential for the dry bean market in 2016.
