Monday midday cash livestock markets

Cattle showlist distribution will be delayed until Tuesday due to Monday’s Martin Luther King Observance. Tight fed supplies are expected to generally support steady to firm packer bids through the balance of January. Cattle did not trade until late in the day on Friday. Compared to the previous week dressed sales in Nebraska sold 2.00 higher at 190.00. Trading was moderate on moderate demand. Trading was moderate in Iowa on moderate demand, live sales were 2.00 higher from 118.00 to 120.00, while dressed sales were 1.00 to 2.00 higher from 189.00 to 190.00. Trading was inactive in other feeding regions.

Boxed beef cutout values are higher to sharply higher on Monday. Choice beef is up .76 at 191.56, select 189.93, up 3.29.

At the Oklahoma National Stockyards on Monday receipts of feeder cattle totaled 3,000 head. Compared to last week, no trend is available in the early rounds due to very limited offerings. Heavy rain and ice across the state hampered livestock movement. Feeder steers medium and large 1 weighing 550 to 600 pounds brought 142.00 to 156.50 per hundredweight. 550 to 6 weight heifers traded at 128.00.

Feeder cattle receipts at the Lexington, Nebraska livestock market totaled 4,050 head. Compared to the previous week, steers sold steady to 3.00 lower, and heifers were mostly steady on comparable offerings. Demand was good from the buyers in the crowd. Feeder steers medium and large 1 weighing 627 pounds brought 147.87 per hundredweight. Replacement feeder heifer weighing 748 pounds averaged 158.47.

The Tama, Iowa feeder cattle auction had receipts of 1948 head on Friday. This was a special preconditioned calf sale. Compared to the previous Friday, feeder steers weighing 500 to 699 pounds were 2.00 to 5.00 higher, heavier weights were steady to 3.00 lower. Heifers steady to 3.25 higher. Trade was active and demand was good. Feeder steers medium and large 1 weighing 676 pounds averaged 142.72 per hundredweight. 674 pound heifers brought 130.10.

Barrows and gilts in the Iowa/Minnesota direct trade are not reported due to confidentiality, the five day rolling average is 61.06. Western direct hogs are .11 lower at 62.16 weighted average on a carcass basis. Nationally the hog market is .84 lower at 60.87. Missouri direct base carcass meat price and Midwest hogs are not reported.

The pork carcass cutout value is 1.54 lower at 78.90 FOB plant. Hams are down the most.

It appears that seasonal hog numbers continue to slowly erode forcing packer procurement to use sharper bids.
