Midday cash livestock markets

The feedlot cattle trade is slow to start on Friday, following light to moderate trade on Wednesday and a light scattered trade in the North on Thursday at mostly 114.00 to 115.00 live and 175.00 dressed. While it looks like business in Kansas and Texas is essentially done for the week, it is possible that Nebraska and Iowa will need to trade more cattle today. Asking prices on cattle left on the showlists are around 118.00 in the South and 178.00 plus in the North.

Boxed beef cutout values are lower in the morning report. Choice beef 190.29, down .22, select 173.59, down. 66.

Feeder cattle receipts at Missouri auctions this week totaled 49,472 head. Compared to last week steers and heifers sold steady to 5.00 higher with some instances of steer calves 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Several local barns actually saw two weeks’ worth of gains as many were closed for the shortened holiday week. All fall the auctions have wondered just where all the cattle were or when they were going to show up in town. It actually turned out to be the largest volume of any single calendar week this year. Feeder steers medium and large 1 averaging 624 pounds traded at 137.72 per hundredweight. 668 pound heifers’ brought 116.93.

Feeder cattle receipts at the Ogallala, Nebraska Livestock Auction totaled 3950 head on Thursday. There was no price comparison to last week due to no sale on Thanksgiving. Demand was good with a good selection of feeder cattle. There was a large crowd with a lot of activity. Feeder steers medium and large 1 averaging 518 pounds averaged 161.94 per hundredweight. 571 pound heifers traded at 129.60.

The Diamond. Missouri TS Whites monthly sheep and goat auction had receipts of 1334 head on Thursday. The supply was good and demand was very good with a near standing room only crowd on hand. All markets were considerably higher than last month. Feeder lambs medium and large 1-2 weighing 25 to 39 pounds brought 220.00 to 227.50 per hundredweight. Wool slaughter lambs choice 2-3 weighing 105 to 121 pounds ranged from 130.00 to 140.00 per hundredweight.

Barrows and gilts in the Iowa/Minnesota direct trade are up .67 at 47.85 weighted average on a carcass basis, the West is .59 higher at 47.77, and nationally the market is up .65 at 47.01. Missouri direct base carcass meat price is steady from 37.00 to 40.00. Midwest hogs on a live basis are steady from 25.00 to 30.00.

The pork carcass cutout value is down .29 at 74.02 FOB plant in the morning report.

The pork carcass cutout value was nearly a dollar higher on Thursday, thanks to stronger demand for all primal cuts except the butt and rib.
