Midday cash livestock markets

Tuesday in feedlot country is typically quiet and the market is untested with bids and asking prices poorly defined. DTN reports some showlists are priced at $105.00 or better, but for the most part producers are watching the board and beef trade in order to gauge the late month price potential. The guess is that significant trade will probably wait until late in the week. Cattle futures were trading higher near midday.

Boxed beef cutouts are higher in the morning report, choice 182.36, up 1.38, select 168.65, up 1.48.

Sioux Falls Regional Stockyards at Worthing, South Dakota had receipts of 1881 cattle on Monday. Steer and heifer calves were lightly tested, with a steady to firm undertone noted. Yearling steers were mostly steady except 900 to 950 pounds 5.00 to 8.00 higher. Yearling heifers sold mostly steady with instances of 3.00 higher on those weighing 850 to 900 pounds. Feeder steers medium and large 1 weighing 923 pounds averaged 127.27 per hundredweight. 870 pound heifers brought 114.73.

At the Joplin, Missouri Regional Stockyards on Monday there were receipts of 4785 cattle. Compared to last week, steer calves trended 2.00 to 6.00 higher, heifer calves and yearling steers were 4.00 to 8.00 higher, yearling heifers steady to 4.00 higher. The demand was moderate to good on a moderate supply. Several strings of true yearlings were in the offering. Feeder steers medium and large 1 averaging 728 pounds brought 132.53 per hundredweight. 728 pound heifers averaged 108.80.

Sheep receipts at the Fruitland, Missouri Livestock Auction totaled 417 head for the monthly sale. Compared to last month, feeder lambs sold 15.00 lower, slaughter lambs were 20.00 lower, slaughter ewes 15.00 lower. Slaughter lambs choice 1-2 weighing 80 to 105 pounds brought 120.00 to 142.50 per hundredweight. Feeder lambs choice 102 a few weighing 35 to 44 pounds traded from 145.00 to 150.00 per hundredweight. There were 271 head of goats in the sale, feeder kids sold 30.00 lower. Stocker and feeder kids’ selection 1-2 weighing 20 to 30 pounds brought 140.00 to 160.00 per hundredweight.

Barrows and gilts in the Iowa/Minnesota direct trade are not reported due to confidentiality. Western hogs 44.72 weighted average on a carcass basis down 1.09, nationally the hog market is 44.11, down 1.13. Missouri direct base carcass meat price is steady from 38.00 to 39.00. In the Midwest hog markets only Zumbrota, Minnesota reporting lives sales at 26.00, down 1.00.

The pork carcass cutout value is .29 higher 73.25 FOB plant in the morning report.

Despite last week’s round of record setting pork production, carcass value moved solidly higher on Monday with all primals catching stronger demand except the loin. So far, pork demand looks great this quarter.
