A decrease in available pasture acres has made it more difficult for some producers to expand their cow herd or get started in the business. More and more of them are looking at confinement production systems—raising cow-calf pairs under a roof or in a drylot—as a viable option compared to buying or renting pastureland.

At the recent Midwest Cow-Calf Symposium in Omaha, we discussed this topic with Emily Skillet of the Alliance for the Future of Agriculture in Nebraska and Moe Russell of Iowa-based Russell Consulting Group.
