Cattle herd growth greater than expected

Growth in beef cow numbers indicates aggressive expansion.  The USDA’s cattle inventory report – the first in a year – has plus signs all over it.  What jumps out at Rabobank animal protein analyst Don Close is the three percent growth in the number of beef cows.

“The additional fallout from that is the likelihood of an even larger available supply of cattle outside of feed yards that will be available placements for the full year,” Close told Brownfield Ag News the day the report was released.  “This one draws attention.”

The monthly cattle on feed report issued a few days ahead of the inventory report was bearish because of the higher than expected number of cattle that it showed being placed into feedlots.
