NE Farmers Union petitions for smaller combines
The Nebraska Farmers Union brought their “smaller combines” petition drive to Husker Harvest Days this week. The petition asks Secretary of Agriculture Vilsack and Congress to consider using stimulus money if necessary to incent the manufacture of discontinued Class IV combines. We discussed the effort with Graham Christensen of Nebraska Farmers Union.
Signs point to a good crop in central Nebraska
Tony Collins, an account manager for Pioneer in south-central Nebraska, says some of the crops have been hurt by rough weather this summer—but he says for those farmers that escaped damage, it should be a good year. Initial reports on harvesting of wet corn, silage and seed corn have been good, which Tony says is usually a pretty good indicator of things to come.
Valley’s new technology highlighted at HHD
At the Valley Irrigation display, we visited with vice-president of marketing and engineering Craig Malsam and equipment product manager Wade Sikkink. We discussed some of the new technology that Valley has to offer this year, including remote monitoring control products and a new GPS guidance system for corner machines.
Controlling the ‘multi-pest complex’ on corn
Syngenta calls it “the multi-pest complex”, a group of insects that strike at different times during the year and are very hard to scout for. Together, they cause about over one billion dollars in damage to the U.S. corn crop each year. However, Syngenta area agronomist Josh Erwin says their new Agrisure Viptera technology is going to address the problem.

ASA president discusses biodiesel, trade issues
Tennessee farmer Johnny Dodson, president of the American Soybean Association, visited Husker Harvest Days on Tuesday. We discussed a wide range of topics with Dodson, including some of the crucial issues affecting soy biodiesel, ASA’s position on climate change legislation and trade issues impacting soybean growers.
Jumpstart increases phospate use efficiency
We stopped by the Novozymes booth at Husker Harvest Days and visited with sales representative Deb Johnson about JumpStart, a biological seed treatment product that enhances phosphorous uptake on wheat, corn and soybeans. Deb says growers are seeing a very good return on their investment in JumpStart.
Asgrow adding nine new RR 2 Yield varieties
Amanda Christie, the new brand manager for Asgrow, is anxiously awaiting harvest to see how the new Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybeans are going to yield. But Amanda says she likes the reports she’s been getting from farmers at Husker Harvest Days and she says Asgrow will introduce nine new Roundup Ready 2 Yield varieties in 2010.
