SCHMACON: ‘Beef’s answer to bacon’

Slice-of-Schmacon-2[1]A new beef product called SCHMACON will be hitting the market over the next 6 months. 

SCHMACON, which is being called “beef’s answer to bacon”, is smoked, cured and glazed slices of beef that closely resemble pork bacon in both appearance and texture.

SCHMACON was developed by Howard Bender, president and CEO of Schmaltz Deli of Naperville, Illinois. Bender was at the recent Cattle Industry Convention in Tampa, touting his new product to cattle producers and the media.

Brownfield talked to Bender about SCHMACON, and his hopes and dreams for the new product.

John Deere launches new 9 Series balers

john deere-balerBuilding on the reliability and popularity of its 8 Series Round Balers, John Deere has introduced 12 new models of its 9 Series Round Balers for 2013.

According to Laura Cobb, senior marketing representative at John Deere Ottumwa Works, the new 9 Series Round Balers offer customers a larger selection of machines that will handle a wide variety of forage and silage baling needs.

Dealing with drought-stressed cattle

Reaching out to the ‘Millennials’

According to Craig Uden of Elwood, Nebraska, chair of the Federation of State Beef Councils, that’s changing the way they promote beef.  We discussed that topic and others with Uden at the recent Cattle Industry Convention in Tampa.

Novus: Solutions, Service, Sustainability

National Beef Cook-Off is underway

The 30th edition of the National Beef Cook-Off is underway. 

From now until April 15, 2013, home cooks can submit their best beef recipes online at for a chance to win $25,000 and a trip to the Metropolitan Cooking & Entertaining Show in Washington, D.C.

According to the current chair of the National Beef Cook-Off, Evelyn Brown of Cullman, Alabama, the contest continues to be one of the most highly regarded recipe/cooking contests in the country.

Case IH unveils new Farmall C tractor

Preventing calf pneumonia and BRD

Pasture weed control during drought

Fifth year of drought for Texas cattleman

Victoria is located in south Texas, an area that has experienced five years of drought.  At the Cattle Industry Convention in Tampa, we visited with McCan about how the drought has impacted his cattle operation.  He also shared his thoughts on the current state of the cattle industry.
