Water quality a priority issue

As Mark Wachtman of Henry County (Ohio), President of the Ohio Corn and Wheat Growers Association (OCWGA) looks ahead to 2013 there are several priority issues on their agenda, including getting a Farm Bill passed, funding for locks and dams and more specific to Ohio, the issue of water quality.

“We’ve got to stay on top of that, we got a little bit of a reprieve this year without the algae bloom being very large in Lake Erie,” said Wachtman. “We would like to see more science put into it, but there are groups that wish to do this today, without science, we’re trying to prevent a knee jerk reaction, let’s think about this.”

Wachtman says the Ohio Corn and Wheat Growers Association has joined 19 other agricultural groups sending a letter to Ohio farmers urging them to take a proactive approach to improve water quality in the state.
