Food safety advocates pleased with FDA funding

fda signFood safety advocates are applauding the big increase in funding for implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).

Under the budget bill approved last week by Congress, the Food and Drug Administration will get a nearly 105 million dollar increase for food safety. That’s more than double the increase House and Senate appropriations bills had previously proposed.

The Food Safety Modernization law is intended to reduce foodborne illnesses that sicken an estimated 48 million Americans each year, and kill several thousand, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The law sets the first on-farm food safety standards and mandates new preventive practices across most of the food supply. It was passed in 2010, but has been plagued by political delays and short funding.
