Farm management analyst betting on one more MFP payment

A farm management analyst believes farmers will receive a third Market Facilitation Program payment early in 2020.

Kent Thiesse with MinnStar Bank in south-central Minnesota says people in the know seem to be optimistic about more trade aid.

“Some folks have said if they get this trade agreement (done) with China, and potentially USMCA we don’t need it. I would say that would be more of an argument not to have MFP payments for 2020 than the last payment for ’19.”

He tells Brownfield MFP has helped keep many farms afloat during a challenging year.

“From a farm income and profitability standpoint, because of weather, low prices, and high input costs. Certainly to be able to get that extra payment would be very helpful coming out of last year (and) going into next year.”

Thiesse says if he were to hedge, he’d hedge on a final round of MFP.
