Disaster aid bill expected to pass House as early as today

The House plans to take up the Disaster relief bill again now that lawmakers have returned from a 10-day Memorial Day break.

Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said over the weekend he expects the legislation that includes more than $5 billion in ag spending to pass with overwhelming support.

The Senate passed the bill 85 to 8 on May 23rd.  Minnesota U.S. Senator Tina Smith tells Brownfield GOP conservatives should no longer be able to stand in the way of providing necessary relief to those who need it.

“Since the House has been out of Session there have been a handful of Republican legislators who have refused to allow the bill to pass by unanimous consent. But everything as I hear is that there are (enough) votes to pass it once the House comes back in session.”

The House is expected to vote on the Disaster aid package for a fourth time today, under an accelerated procedure that will require it to pass by at least a two-thirds margin.
