Lawmakers ask for permanent MPP extension

Three Members of Congress have asked Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack to permanently extend the enrollment deadline for the Margin Protection Program for dairy producers.  Democrats Collin Peterson of Minnesota and Debbie Stabenow of Michigan along with Republican Michael Conaway of Texas sent Vilsack a letter seeking a December 31st deadline instead of September 30th.

They say producers rely on futures information and estimates of their own financial health to make educated decisions about how much coverage they should purchase, and a September deadline is too early.

The MPP deadline was extended in both of the past two years and the lawmakers want to make a December 31st deadline permanent.
