A growing season of ups and downs

A farmer in southwest Indiana says this growing season has been one filled with ups and downs.

Mark Seib farms in Posey County, Indiana.  “We have corn that’s tasseling and pollenating,” he says.  “And we have corn that’s just barely over knee high.  We had a very long planting season.  Water was an issue – and we’ve had issues ever since.”

He tells Brownfield rainfall didn’t come an inch at a time – it fell several inches at a time every couple of days.  “Did we get it planted right – no,” he says.  “Did we get the right stand?  No.  We don’t have what I want to call the USDA’s conditions of being perfect or in excellent shape.  We’ve got holes out in the field and those won’t be filled because the crop didn’t come up.”

Seib says he did find a silver lining… Headed into the recent heat wave – he was certain the crop had plenty of soil moisture and was able to tolerate the heat pretty well.
