Bill introduced to take wolves off endangered list
Farmers could protect their livestock from wolves under a U.S. House of Representatives bill introduced this week.
The bill by Minnesota Democrat Collin Peterson and Wisconsin Republican Sean Duffy would return management of the gray wolves to the states and stop federal judges from protecting the predators.
Duffy tells Brownfield the bipartisan bill has the support of Speaker Paul Ryan, and with a new Senate, has a better chance of passing… which he says is needed now. “It’s an issue that really affects different regions of the country, that we have the gray wolf population decimating our livestock causing great economic harm to our farmers.”
Two federal judges put wolves back on the endangered species list in 2014, taking away state management. It’s now illegal to harm a wolf, even to protect children, pets, and livestock.
Duffy says the bill will have to go through the House Natural Resources Committee before reaching the House floor.
The bill is getting praise from two Wisconsin state legislators. State Senator Tom Tiffany and Representative Adam Jarchow issued a joint statement urging Congress to pass it as soon as possible, and for Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker to instruct the Department of Natural Resources to prepare for a fall wolf hunt.
The bill is HR 424, and is co-sponsored by:
Liz Cheney, Wyoming
Richard Nolan, Minnesota
Tom Emmer, Minnesota
Raul Labrador, Idaho
James Sensenbrenner, Wisconsin
Michael Simpson, Idaho
Bill Huizenga, Michigan
Mike Gallagher, Wisconsin (Reid Ribble’s freshman replacement)
Ron Kind, Wisconsin
John Moolenaar, Michigan
Tim Walberg, Michigan
Glenn Grothman, Wisconsin
