Vilsack asked about ag message from Trump
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says the message from president-elect Donald Trump to U.S. agriculture has been short on important issues that affect farmers. Vilsack was careful to tell farm broadcasters (Thursday) he wasn’t being critical of the incoming administration, but he did say, “I think producers are very fixated on regulations and on taxes.”
Vilsack says those are important but there are other larger issues that impact the bottom line that Trump campaigned against – like trade agreements, estate taxes and immigration, “How successful will agriculture, specifically specialty crop production be, without a workforce? And, why isn’t that a conversation JUST as important and just as frequently discussed as regulations and taxes?”
Vilsack says the conversation doesn’t mirror the sophistication and of agriculture and doesn’t help the rest of the country understand what an incredibly complex this industry is and how all of that is really important.
