Indiana corn 94%, soybeans 96% harvested

Harvest is winding down in Indiana and last week’s first hard frost of the year helped farmers finish up harvest in some of the more challenging fields.

According to the latest weekly crop and weather report 94 percent of corn and 96 percent of soybeans have been harvested.

Mike Beard farms in central Indiana.  He says corn yields were lower than he had expected.  “My corn yields were constant across many of the fields – which was a little surprising,” he says.  “I didn’t have as many lows, but didn’t have as high of highs I would like.  But, that’s the year was.”

But, he says his soybean yields were above average this year.  “The majority of them had great stems and wanted to lay flat after they got four foot tall,” he says.  “But still yielded well – in fact best average soybean yield I’ve ever had.”

Ninety-six percent of the state’s winter wheat is planted, 85 percent emerged and 73 percent is rated good to excellent.
