U.S. cheese, butter production up on year

The USDA says most dairy product production levels during May 2016 were above May 2015. This year’s U.S. milk production has been running ahead of USDA expectations, leading to bigger product production and larger cold storage numbers.

Cheese was 998 million pounds, up 1.2% on the year, with a 5.2% rise in Italian type cheese to 439 million cancelling out a 1.9% decline in American type cheese to 400 million pounds. Butter production was up 0.3% on the year at 170 million pounds.

Nonfat dry milk for human consumption dropped 8.3%, while skim milk powders jumped 41.4%. Dry whey the dry whey total was 3.1% higher, lactose for human and animal consumption rose 1.9%, and the whey protein concentrate total fell 12.6%. Hard ice cream production was 9.8% higher and lowfat was 2.1% lower. Sherbet was down 6.6% and the frozen yogurt total was 1.4% lower.

The milk production numbers for June are due out Thursday, July 21st and cold storage numbers will be released on Friday, July 22nd.
