Michigan crop condition continues to falter

Corn-nebraska sunset 8-12Dry conditions persisted last week throughout Michigan and crop condition is worsening.  USDA NASS says as of Sunday, topsoil moisture was 66 percent short to very short, subsoil moisture was 57 percent short to very short.

The Great Lakes Regional office says the state’s corn crop condition dropped seven points to 56 percent good to excellent. Soybeans are nine percent blooming and condition declined an additional six points to 57 percent good to excellent.  The winter wheat crop is 55 percent mature, three percent harvested, and condition declined by five points to 69 percent good to excellent.

Dry bean emergence is ahead of average at 98 percent and condition remained steady at 65 percent good to excellent. Sugarbeet condition dropped an additional two points to 70 percent good to excellent.  First cutting of alfalfa is 96 percent complete, second cutting is at 33 percent.

Hand thinning of apples and peaches is underway. Hail and wind damage in the southwest earlier in the season has caused trauma blight.  Sweet cherry harvest is in full swing with variable fruit sizes.  Tart cherry harvest has just started in southern counties.  Hand-harvest of early season blueberries has started with good quality and yields reported.  Early summer red and black raspberry harvest is underway.  Yellow squash, zucchini and cucumber harvest continues.  Sweet corn is beginning to tassel.
