Wheat harvest in Kansas is picking up steam, thanks to nearly ideal harvesting weather. And early reports from southern Kansas indicate the crop is running above average in both quality and yield.

According to Kansas Wheat Commission reports, test weights are running from 60 to 65 pounds per bushel with early yield reports ranging from 35 to 50 bushels per acre.

On Friday, the USDA increased its estimate of the Kansas wheat crop from its May forecast of 353 million bushels to 394 million bushels. The average wheat yield estimate increased to 48 bushels per acre, up five bushels from May and up 11 bushels from last year.
